Mum usually says she does not need flowers, and then puts them where everyone can see them. The best bunches for her are the ones that look generous and last: roses, spray roses and chrysanthemums tend to hold up well, and hydrangeas fill a vase.
Think about her colours before you choose. A mum who likes a bright kitchen will enjoy sunflowers or yellow roses; one who likes a calm sitting room is better served by cream, vanilla and pale pink. A scented candle can add something she will use after the flowers have gone.
The bouquets here come from two UK florists, from letterbox bunches at the lower end to a lavish hydrangea arrangement at the top. Prices shown are for the smallest size. For Mother's Day in March, order early, because the best-selling bouquets sell out first.

Questions people ask
What are the best flowers for Mother's Day?
Roses, spray roses, hydrangeas and tulips are popular. Order a week ahead, because Mother's Day is one of the busiest days of the year for florists.
What flowers last the longest?
Chrysanthemums and carnations tend to last longest, with roses and hydrangeas close behind. Change the water every couple of days and trim the stems.
What if mum lives far away?
